Overview
This short out-and-back delivers a massive view payoff for minimal effort. At roughly 2.6–2.8 miles (4.2–4.5 km) total, Castle Head Track runs from the Narrow Neck management trail out along a spur to cliff-edge lookouts over the Jamison Valley. Most hikers take about 2 hours at a relaxed pace with photo stops.
Route & Experience
From the small car park by the locked gate on Glenraphael Drive, follow the wide, stony fire trail. An indistinct side track early on leads left to a quick Jamison Valley viewpoint before you return to the main trail. Continue to the clearly signed Castle Head turnoff on the left and head along the spur. The final ~850 m is mostly flat and clear, with rocky outcrops and open vistas as the bush track approaches the lookout area on the Narrow Neck Plateau edge.
Scenery
This walk is all about the panorama: sweeping views across the Jamison Valley to Mount Solitary and the Ruined Castle, with distant Three Sisters on a clear day. Post‑2020 fire regrowth has opened the track, so you’ll see fresh green shoots among burnt trunks—a stark, beautiful contrast. The plateau’s sandstone cliffs and eroded valleys create the classic Blue Mountains drama you’re here for.
Difficulty & Who It Suits
Generally easy, with gentle undulations on the management trail and a mostly flat finish to the lookout. A few sections are rocky, and there are cliff edges near the end. Navigation is straightforward overall, though one or two side tracks can be indistinct; basic bushwalking savvy helps. It’s a great choice if you want big views without a big day.
Best Time to Hike
Good year‑round. Spring and autumn bring mild temps and lively flora. Winter can add moody mist—and sometimes obscure the views—so aim for clear days. Summer can be warm; start early and carry water. Weekdays and early mornings often mean you’ll have the lookouts to yourself.
Getting There & Tips
Access is via Glenraphael Drive (unsealed), usually fine for 2WD in dry weather; after heavy rain, a 4WD is wise. Expect potholes and drive slowly. There’s limited signage in places—download a map or GPX just in case. No dogs on this national park track. Pack layers for changeable weather, sun protection, and take care near unfenced cliff edges.
