Princes Rock Lookout Track

Overview

This is a short, heritage-flavored bushwalk from the Wentworth Falls picnic area to Princes Rock Lookout. Expect roughly 1.8 km (about 1.1 miles) return, taking 30–60 minutes depending on photo stops. It’s graded NSW Grade 3: a formed path with plenty of steps, a gentle but steady descent out and a noticeable climb back. No dogs, and it’s not wheelchair or stroller friendly.

Why go

For minimal effort you get the full, front-on view of Wentworth Falls—top to bottom—plus a vast sweep of Jamison Valley with Mount Solitary straight ahead and Kings Tableland off to the left. The lookout itself is a charming, parapet-style historic platform that feels very “old Blue Mountains.” Along the way you’ll see sandstone escarpments, open eucalypt forest, and the odd bird flitting through the canopy.

Trail experience

You leave from the Wentworth Falls picnic area and descend via a well-made track and stone steps to the lookout, then return the same way. Surfaces are mostly compacted dirt and rock, sometimes uneven. Plan on a short but steady uphill finish on the way back; elevation change is modest (around 30 m/100 ft), but you’ll feel the stairs.

Facilities and logistics

Trailhead facilities are solid: toilets and picnic tables at the picnic area. Parking is here as well, but it can fill on weekends—arrive early or late for a smoother visit. Despite the heritage water fountains you may notice beside the path, don’t count on potable water—bring your own. If you’re arriving by train, you can walk in via the local paths (many visitors link from the short paths to Jamison Lookout and Wentworth Falls Lookout before branching to Princes Rock).

Best time to hike

It’s worthwhile year-round. Spring and autumn bring comfortable temps and flattering light; winter often delivers crisp, clear views (pack a layer). Summer can run hot, so start early. If you can, time your visit for after rain—the waterfall puts on a better show. Early morning or late afternoon also trims the crowds and gives you softer photography light across Jamison Valley.

Tips

• Combine this with nearby lookouts (Jamison and Wentworth Falls) for a relaxed mini-circuit of big vistas.
• Keep kids close near cliff edges and the lookout railings—drops are real.
• The track is short, but the return is uphill: pace yourselves and bring water.
