Overview

This is the definition of high reward for minimal effort. From the small car park near Blackheath, it’s about 130 meters one way to the Wind Eroded Cave—roughly 0.16 miles total out-and-back. Expect 10–20 minutes of walking time, plus however long you’ll want to linger under the sculpted overhang.

What You’ll See

Despite the name, it’s not a deep cave but a tall, wave-shaped sandstone overhang polished by millennia of wind-driven sand. The smooth curves and honeycomb textures are wildly photogenic. The cave sits near the edge of the plateau with glimpses over the Grose Valley, and the nearby Anvil Rock Lookout (on a separate short path from the same car park) delivers the big panoramas.

Trail Experience

The track is short, well-formed, and clearly signed, with a small flight of steps at the start and some naturally uneven surfaces near the rock. It’s an easy Grade 2-style stroll suitable for most visitors, including families. Wear sturdy shoes—the path is short but still rocky in places.

Best Time to Hike

Accessible year-round. Spring and autumn bring comfortable temps and wildflowers; winter often means crisp air and clear views. In summer, go early or late to avoid the exposed midday heat on the rock.

Tips & Smart Pairings

Pair this with Anvil Rock Lookout from the same car park; you can do both comfortably in under an hour. Bring water and snacks—there are no facilities here. Photographers: soft morning or late afternoon light shows off the rock textures best.

Access & Logistics

Trailhead parking is at the end of Anvil Rock Road, which turns off Hat Hill Road from Blackheath. The access road is sealed and suitable for all vehicles. There are no toilets or water at the trailhead.
