Despite the name, Pilot Mountain Overlook (signed as “Pilot Mountain View,” around MP 189.1) is a straightforward roadside pull-off with a sign—and that’s about it. Tree growth has completely blocked what was once a vista, so don’t expect mountain or valley scenery.

At present, there’s no view of Pilot Mountain or the surrounding landscape. The sign mentions the Mount Airy Granite Quarry—the “world’s largest surface granite quarry”—but you can’t see it from here.

Amenities and Setup

This is a basic pull-off with room to stop briefly. There are no restrooms, picnic tables, trails, or interpretive exhibits—just the overlook sign.

Only if you’re the type who likes checking off every named overlook. Most travelers will be happier saving their time for nearby viewpoints that actually deliver scenery or heading to Pilot Mountain State Park for close-up views of the mountain itself.
