Blair Castle & Gardens is the historic Atholl family home at Blair Atholl: a white Scottish Baronial castle with 30 furnished rooms, a nine-acre walled garden and walks through the grounds. If historic interiors and formal gardens are your kind of stop, give it a half day; there is much more here than a quick look at the front of the castle.

The self-guided castle tour takes about an hour, and the suggested garden-and-grounds route another 45 minutes. That is a good starting point, but the woodland paths, deer enclosure and side paths make it easy to stay longer. You can take the rooms at your own pace, then head outside for the garden and the wider estate grounds.

A castle built in layersComyn's Tower, dated to 1269, is the oldest known part of the present castle.

Comyn's Tower, dated to 1269, is the oldest known part of the present castle. A Great Hall was added in 1530 and is now the Dining Room. In 1740 the 2nd Duke began reshaping the medieval castle as a Georgian home; in the 1860s and 1870s David Bryce and William Burn restored the turrets and battlements and added the entrance hall and ballroom, creating the Scottish Baronial outline you see today. During the First World War, the castle also served as an auxiliary hospital.

Take a turn through Hercules GardenThe nine-acre walled garden is named for its life-size statue of Hercules.

The nine-acre walled garden is named for its life-size statue of Hercules. It has an orchard of more than 100 fruit trees and a 275-metre south-facing border, with ponds, clipped hedges and a red Chinese bridge. The statue and long border show off the garden's scale; for a closer frame, look for the bridge crossing the water or the statue set against the formal beds.

Diana's Grove packs tall, exotic trees into a two-acre woodland. Two 18th-century bridges over the Banvie Burn lead toward the ruins of St Bride's Kirk. The kirk has Celtic-era origins, and after the 1689 Battle of Killiecrankie the remains of John Graham, Viscount Dundee, were buried there. It is a quieter, more atmospheric part of the visit than the furnished rooms.

Red deer live in an enclosure near Banvie Hall, Highland cattle graze nearby, and red squirrels may be seen in the garden trees. Families also have a woodland adventure playground, so the grounds work well when not everyone wants to spend the visit indoors.

Tullibardine Restaurant in Banvie Hall is the sit-down option, with hot meals and lighter fare such as homemade soup, sandwiches, salads and baking; the menu uses local ingredients, including estate meat. The outdoor Cannon cabin has a quicker mix of soup, sandwiches, fresh baking and local Stewart ice cream, with picnic benches nearby when the weather cooperates.

The visitor car park is about 100 metres from the castle, and accessible parking is near a step-free entrance. The historic rooms have stairs and uneven floors, with no passenger lift; some grounds routes suit mobility scooters, though surfaces and slopes vary. Leashed dogs can explore the gardens and grounds but cannot enter the castle or restaurant, apart from assistance dogs. The attraction is seasonal, so check its current opening dates before setting out.
