Old Bridge of Tilt and the Red Squirrel Walk“You're approaching Old Bridge of Tilt, with woodland walks from Glen Tilt car park. For a short stop, I'd choose the red-marked Red Squirrel Walk, a gentle one-mile loop taking thirty to forty minutes beside the river.”

Trail guide
Balvenie Pillar Path is a one-mile loop from Glen Tilt Car Park, through riverside woodland to the Balvenie Pillar and back along an estate road. Allow about 45 minutes, or longer if you stop at the Grotto and pillar. It’s a compact walk with a brief steep section and steps, not a flat stroll. The separate four-mile Glen Tilt viewpoint circuit also visits the pillar, then continues farther into the glen.
Follow the light-blue waymarkers from the car park toward the River Tilt. A short Grotto detour looks down to the water; then the path heads northeast to the main Glen Tilt track. Turn onto the old road to reach the pillar. On the way down, follow the path beside the fence and take the 16 steps to the bottom. Turn left there and follow the estate road back to the car park. Keep to the light-blue markers: several other color-marked walks start nearby.
John Stewart was executed at Hangman’s Knoll in 1630, the last public hanging on the estate. The Earl of Atholl raised the pillar on that spot in 1755. From the top of the small hill, look over farmland toward Schiehallion.
Red squirrels are often seen in these woods; buzzards, sparrowhawks, tawny owls, roe deer and brown hares also live here. Dogs are allowed, but keep them close around wildlife and livestock, and use a lead or close control in fields with sheep. The leaflet lists no toilet or drinking-water point on the route. The Atholl Estates Information Centre and a fish-and-chip shop are a separate stop near Blair Castle.
