Linn of Dee

Linn of Dee is a narrow rocky gorge where the River Dee squeezes through a gap in the rock, beneath a Gothic granite bridge. Keep it on your route for a short, striking riverside stop; from the car park, a short walk brings you to the bridge and the gorge. If you want more than the view, this is also a useful start for walks into Glen Lui.

The Dee is forced through a tight channel, so the bridge gives you a close look at the water and the rock walls. What you see changes with the river level: lower water reveals more ledges and pools, while a fuller river makes the constricted passage feel more powerful. Give the edge and moving water space, especially with children. For a photo, look down from the bridge, then use the riverside path to frame the arch with the gorge below it.

The present bridge opened in 1857, with Queen Victoria performing the opening. It replaced earlier timber crossings; a wooden bridge was swept away in the 1829 Muckle Spate flood. The Linn was also one of Victoria’s favourite picnic spots, which is a nice bit of context for a place that still works well as a simple stop with food from your own bag.

Waymarked paths follow the river through regenerating Caledonian pinewood and into Glen Lui. A permanent orienteering course has shorter 1.5 km and longer 5 km options. The estate’s ancient pinewoods support red squirrels and pine martens, with crossbills and black grouse among its characteristic birds; take your time in the trees, but treat wildlife as a bonus rather than a sure thing.

The road west from Braemar ends at the Linn of Dee car park, about six miles from the village. Parking is paid for non-members and free for National Trust for Scotland or National Trust members. There’s no café at the Linn, so bring a picnic if you want to eat here. Car-park toilets and the small information hut are seasonal, so don’t count on them outside the main season.
