Trail guide
Creag Bhalg is a 668 m hill in Mar Lodge Estate. The Claybokie route is an out-and-back of about 6 km (3.7 miles) return, with roughly 300 m of climbing; allow about two to two and a half hours. Tracks rise through Scots pine and scattered trees before a thin path crosses open heather to a broad summit cairn and a wide Cairngorms panorama. Some guides quote 3 miles for this hill; for the detailed Claybokie route, plan on the longer 6 km figure. It is a satisfying short summit outing, but the final path is faint and the remote setting makes careful navigation part of the walk.
Start at the roadside verge opposite Claybokie and follow the climbing estate tracks through the trees. There are several forks, so keep your map out instead of relying on a single obvious track. Just beyond a deer fence, the route leaves the track to the right for a faint path through heather toward a lone dead tree. The path improves before a low shelter cairn; just before it, take the faint branch on the right to a lower top. The true summit cairn is about 30 m farther on, also to the right. Retrace the same route for the standard walk back. A lower green path drops to the Mar Lodge entrance; taking it makes a different return along the estate road and adds about 1 km.
The top is a wide open summit rather than a rocky pinnacle. On a clear day, look northwest across the Cairngorms: Ben Macdui, Cairn Toul and Derry Cairngorm are among the high tops on the panorama, with Beinn a’ Bhuird, Ben Avon and Lochnagar farther around the skyline. The view opens once you are above the trees, so a clear day makes a real difference. For a photo, include the summit cairn in the foreground to give the open mountain view a sense of scale.
The start is an informal roadside verge by a wall opposite Claybokie, on the road between Linn of Dee and Linn of Quoich; it is not a marked car park. Creag Bhalg is also known as Womb Hill. Mar Lodge Estate is remote enough that mobile and GPS signal may be absent, so bring navigation equipment you know how to use. Dogs are welcome, but keep them under close control or on a lead, especially during ground-nesting bird season from April to August.
