The Glenlivet Distillery

The Glenlivet Distillery is a working Speyside single-malt distillery with its visitor centre at Minmore in Glenlivet. If whisky is part of why you came to the Cairngorms, this is worth the drive: the visit connects the place, its production and the name in the glass. The Original guided tour takes you through the Speyside Room and Process Room, into the distillery and Warehouse 1, then finishes with a tasting.

Whisky was made illicitly in the remote Livet valley before George Smith secured a licence in 1824, becoming the first licensed distiller in the parish of Glenlivet. He began at Upper Drumin, then moved the distillery to Minmore in the late 1850s to reach more streams and springs. The first operation produced about 50 gallons a week; by 1859, Minmore was producing 600. That jump gives you a sense of how quickly a small valley distillery grew into a famous name.

The campus has a heritage exhibition, the Old Maltings Coffee Shop, a whisky and gift shop, toilets and parking. The coffee shop is convenient for a break, but check its current menu if you need a full meal.

The distillery is about 10 miles from Tomintoul, so plan it as a destination rather than a quick roadside stop. Book the tour you want before setting out; visitors have reported that walk-up slots can be full. Access varies by tour: the Original is listed with wheelchair access, while Visionary and Reflection do not have an alternative accessible route. Check the specific tour details if step-free access matters. The campus is a modern working site, not a preserved old distillery, which is worth knowing if you are expecting a rustic historic setting.
