Horseshoe Shelter Gallery is a small pictograph panel set low on the sandstone wall in Horseshoe Canyon, near High Gallery. It is its own stop, separate from the much larger Great Gallery farther down the route. It suits visitors who want to see more than the headline panel; if you are short on time or energy, the Great Gallery is the better-known destination.

The low red panel includes an animal-like figure beside upright forms and a cluster of geometric and humanlike shapes. Barrier Canyon Style is the broad label used for rock art across the canyon, but no reliable date or interpretation for this panel itself is established. Notice the arrangement and sandstone setting without assigning a story to individual figures. For a photo, include the line of markings and the pale wall together; a tight crop loses the sense of the whole panel.

Plan for the approachThis is a stop on a remote canyon hike, not a roadside pullout.

This is a stop on a remote canyon hike, not a roadside pullout. Horseshoe Shelter comes before Great Gallery, but the National Park Service’s published seven-mile, five-plus-hour figure is for the Great Gallery round trip; the exact round-trip distance to this panel is not established. The descent begins with a steep 780-foot drop, then the route crosses uneven rock and sand; you climb it back out. Bring one gallon of water per person and do not rely on GPS alone. The west-rim approach includes long stretches of graded dirt road that can require four-wheel drive after weather changes, so check conditions before setting out. Pets are prohibited below the rim. A vault toilet is at the west-rim trailhead, but there is no water there.
