Kirk’s Cabin

Kirk’s Cabin is a hand-hewn log homestead in upper Salt Creek, one of the historic stops along the Needles District’s 22.5-mile Salt Creek trail. The appeal is the surviving cabin and its nearby ranch remains; this is part of a remote walk or horseback trip, not a roadside attraction.

Roads to either end of the trail may require high-clearance four-wheel drive or be impassable. The Cathedral Butte Trailhead is outside the park, about 18 miles down Beef Basin and Bridger Jack Road; the trail drops 1,500 feet over loose, steep ground into the canyon. Seasonal flooding and dense vegetation can make the wash difficult to follow. Mosquitoes and gnats can be prevalent from early summer through autumn. Carry enough water for your route: no dependable potable-water point is confirmed at the cabin, and spring flow can vary.

Records place the cabin around 1890 and identify Lee Kirk as its original owner. It served as the center of his farming operation, but he left after a few years; cowboys may have used it later. Estimates range from the mid-to-late 1880s to around 1890, so the exact year is uncertain. A 1911 survey described nearby irrigated land as a meadow capable of producing hay.

The cabin was built from hand-hewn local cottonwood logs on a dry-laid sandstone foundation, with shallow dovetail corners, drilled holes and wooden pegs. Remains of a wagon, corrals and fencing nearby make the ranch setting easier to picture. The cabin sits within the protected Salt Creek archaeological district. Frame the cabin with its stone chimney, then look for the wagon as a separate detail; keep to durable surfaces and leave the historic remains undisturbed.
