All American Man

All American Man is a pictograph in an alcove wall of Salt Creek Canyon. Its round body, pale and dark bands, and long legs stand out against sandstone pocked with smaller hollows. This is a backcountry stop, best for someone already making a Salt Creek trip; it is not a quick detour from a road.

The panel is about a mile south of the Salt Creek 3 campsite. The Salt Creek Trail runs 22.5 miles between Cathedral Butte and Peekaboo, and most backpackers spend two or three nights in the canyon. Dense growth, seasonal flooding, and wet stretches can make the wash route hard to follow. A through-hike needs a vehicle shuttle, and roads to either end can be impassable or require high-clearance four-wheel drive. Overnight camping is by reservation at designated sites or in the Salt & Horse Zone; dispersed camping is not allowed.

Salt Creek is part of the Salt Creek Archeological District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The broader area has more than 10,000 years of human history. That span describes the canyon, not a confirmed date for this particular painting.

Park rules prohibit entering archaeological sites unless they are designated open, so view the panel from outside. For a photo, include the whole figure with the pocketed sandstone around it; do not move into the alcove for a closer frame.
