Upheaval Dome Overlook Trail

Overview

This is a short, moderately steep hike to two dramatic viewpoints over Upheaval Dome—one of the most puzzling landforms on the Colorado Plateau. Plan on 1.3 miles total round trip if you visit both overlooks (the first overlook is much shorter). Expect uneven rock, a few short, steep pitches, and zero shade, but the payoff is immediate and spectacular.

Route and What You’ll See

From the parking area at the very end of Upheaval Dome Road, follow signs toward the first overlook. You’ll cross the Syncline Loop early—stay on the clearly signed overlook trail. The first viewpoint arrives after a brief climb (about 0.3 miles one way) and features interpretive exhibits that make sense of the unusual scene below. Continue along cairns and stone steps over slickrock to the second overlook for a broader perspective into the crater and toward Upheaval Canyon. The second viewpoint is more exposed, higher, and typically quieter.

Why It’s Interesting

Upheaval Dome is a bona fide mystery. Two leading theories spar for top billing: a salt dome pushing up from below versus an ancient meteorite impact. Either way, rocks that once sat roughly a mile underground are now exposed in the crater’s core. From above, you’ll spot the gray central rocks ringed by colorful sandstone layers—a wild, high-contrast bullseye that’s easy to appreciate from both overlooks.

Difficulty and Conditions

Call it moderate: short distance, but rocky footing, carved steps, and some steeper bits—especially to the second overlook. The trail is sun-baked and often windy; there’s little to no shade. In winter, snow or ice can make the slickrock slippery. The first overlook can feel crowded; the second sees fewer people but more exposure to wind.

Tips and Tricks

• Park early—the small lot is shared with the Syncline Loop and fills fast in peak season. Restrooms are at the trailhead.
• Bring real water and sun protection; there’s no shade and summer heat is intense. In hot months, start early or go late.
• Watch junctions: don’t accidentally follow the strenuous Syncline Loop. Stick to signed “Overlook” and follow cairns.
• The second overlook is worth the extra effort for wider views and fewer crowds. Secure hats and loose items—gusts can be fierce.
• Pets aren’t allowed on this trail. No special permit is needed beyond park entry.

Best Time to Hike

Year-round, but spring and fall are the sweet spot for comfort. In summer, go at dawn or late afternoon for cooler temps and softer light; midday is harsh, hot, and busy. Winter can be beautifully quiet, but watch for icy patches on slickrock.
