Pros & cons
PROS
- Connects directly to the White Rim for creative backpacking linkups
- Remarkable solitude compared to the busy rim overlooks
CONS
- Energy-sapping deep sand across long stretches
- Route can braid near the river after storms, slowing navigation
Park at the Upheaval Dome parking area at the end of Upheaval Dome Road; a small shared lot for the overlooks and Syncline Loop that fills quickly in peak seasons.
No reliable water until the river (must treat); extreme heat and little shade; flash flood risk in stormy weather; sandy wash and loose rock; pay attention to cairns where the canyon braids near the river.
Overview
Upheaval Canyon drops from the Upheaval Dome area into a classic desert wash—towering walls, colorful strata, and deep quiet. It’s a remote, rugged walk that trades rim-top panoramas for canyon-floor scale and solitude. Expect shifting from open slickrock near the Dome area to a broader, sandier corridor as you work down-canyon toward the Green River.
Distance and Route
From the Syncline Loop junction, the Upheaval Canyon Trail runs about 3.5 miles one way to the White Rim Road. Many hikers treat it as an out-and-back from that junction, turning around when they’ve had their fill of sand and sun. If you start from the Upheaval Dome parking area, your total mileage will be longer depending on the approach you choose. Overall elevation change along the canyon bottom is minimal compared to rim trails, but the sandy wash makes the effort add up.
Difficulty and Conditions
Moderate overall, with no technical moves—just honest desert hiking. The catch is footing and exposure: long stretches of deep sand, loose cobbles, and very little shade. Navigation is generally straightforward in the main wash, though the route can braid and feel vague near the river, especially after storms. There are no reliable water sources along the trail; the river must be treated if used.
Best Time to Hike
Spring and fall offer the most forgiving temperatures. Summer is brutally hot—start at dawn if you go at all. Winter is possible but can bring cold temps and icy patches in shaded sections. Whatever the season, check the forecast and avoid canyons when storms threaten.
Tips
Carry more water than you think you need, wear sturdy boots for sand and rock, and start early. Watch for cairns at junctions or where the wash splits, and secure an overnight permit if you plan to camp. This corridor is also a useful connector for backpacking itineraries that link with the White Rim.
Geology and What You’ll See
You’re walking through a cross-section of desert time—layered canyon walls, slickrock benches, and a gradual transition to riparian vegetation (cottonwoods and tamarisk) closer to the lower canyon. The nearby Upheaval Dome is one of the park’s big geological debates—impact versus salt dome—and lends context to the fractured, tilted rocks you’ll notice throughout.
Is It Worth It?
If you crave solitude, canyon scale, and geology underfoot, yes. If you’re short on time or hate sand slogging, the nearby Upheaval Dome overlooks deliver quick, high-reward views with far less effort.
