Whale Rock

Whale Rock is a long sandstone dome on Island in the Sky, its rounded ridge resembling a whale. It is a good short stop if you want to get out onto the slickrock: the out-and-back is 0.8 mile, gains 141 feet and takes about an hour. The whale profile can be seen from the road; reaching the broad top means a climb from the trailhead on Upheaval Dome Road.

The route starts near the rock’s tail and climbs over exposed sandstone toward the feature called its blowhole. Cairns mark the intended line, but worn side tracks can be confusing; stay with the markers instead of choosing a line up the steep side. The surface is rough and uneven, with rocky slopes and stone steps, so shoes with grip and care around edges matter. It is not wheelchair accessible, and dogs are not allowed except service animals.

Whale Rock belongs to a broad outer ring of sandstone around Upheaval Dome. As you cross it, the “tail,” “back,” and “blowhole” are visual names for parts of its whale-shaped profile; the formation itself is the draw, rather than a separate built lookout.
