Pros & cons
PROS
- Quick hike to wide-ranging views over the Upheaval Dome area
- Fun slickrock climb with handrails aiding the steeper sections
CONS
- Fully exposed to sun and heat
- No restrooms or water at the trailhead
Overview
A big, rounded sandstone fin that really does look like a whale’s back, Whale Rock is one of the most playful short hikes on Island in the Sky. You’ll walk up the “tail,” stroll the broad slickrock “back,” and pop out on top for big panoramas—great payoff for minimal effort and a hit with kids.
Trail at a Glance
- Location: Along Upheaval Dome Road, near the end of the spur
- Distance: About 0.8 miles round-trip
- Elevation gain: Roughly 130–140 feet
- Surface: Sandy start that quickly turns to open slickrock; follow the signed route with handrails on the steeper bit
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate due to the slickrock angle and brief scramble
What You’ll See
From the top, you get sweeping views across the Upheaval Dome country and the mesas and canyons of Island in the Sky. The rock’s whale-like profile is obvious from the trailhead and makes the ascent feel imaginative and fun.
Best Time to Visit
Go early or late. Sunrise and sunset serve up cooler temperatures and dramatic light on the sandstone, and the short route makes it easy to slot in around busier stops. Midday can be scorching and harsh for photos.
On-the-Ground Tips
- Wear shoes with good grip—slickrock can feel slippery, especially if damp or icy.
- There’s no shade; bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.
- The route is short but exposed and breezy on top—pack a light layer if it’s windy.
Amenities and Logistics
Expect minimal services. There’s a small trailhead parking area directly at the start. No restrooms or water here; the nearest toilets are at the Upheaval Dome trailhead about a mile away by road. Come self-sufficient.
Wildlife
Nothing special is reported here—don’t plan this stop around wildlife viewing. Think of it as a quick, scenic scramble for big views rather than a nature-watch spot.
