Pros & cons
PROS
- Real solitude below the rim even when the overlooks are busy
- Clockwise direction often gives more afternoon shade on the long ascent
CONS
- No views into Upheaval Dome from the loop itself
- Sparse markings make navigation and attention to cairns essential
Park at the Upheaval Dome trailhead lot (same area as the Dome overlooks) in the Island in the Sky district; arrive early on busy days.
Strenuous loop with steep descents/ascents, boulder scrambles, and limited wayfinding; no reliable water, intense summer heat, winter ice possible. Carry at least 1 gallon per person, navigation, and a headlamp; rescues are common.
Overview
This is the Island in the Sky district’s bruiser: an approximately 8.1‑mile loop that circles the enigmatic Upheaval Dome. Expect about 1,500 feet of total elevation change, 5–7 hours for fit hikers (plan extra if you’re unsure), and a full sampler of desert terrain—slickrock, dry washes, boulder fields, and steep switchbacks. It’s strenuous, remote‑feeling, and absolutely rewarding for those who like their hikes rugged.
What you’ll see
Once you leave the rim, the trail drops into a dramatic canyon with towering walls, colorful strata, and long, quiet stretches along sandy washes. You’ll traverse slickrock slabs and rugged boulder fields beneath the outer ring of Upheaval Dome. Heads‑up: the loop does not provide a view into the dome’s interior. If you want to peer into the crater‑like feature, tack on the separate Upheaval Dome Overlook trail before or after.
Trail experience
Markings are intermittent and often just cairns; route‑finding matters. You’ll negotiate steep descents and ascents, stretches of loose sand, and scrambling that can edge toward Class 2/3 in spots. Many hikers choose to go clockwise: you descend steeply early, then tackle a longer, often shadier and sandier ascent later in the day.
Safety and preparation
Rescues are common here because the loop is easy to underestimate. Carry at least 1 gallon (4 liters) of water per person (more in heat), substantial calories, a map/GPS, and a headlamp. There are no reliable water sources. Start early, especially in warm seasons. Winter can bring snow/ice (traction may be necessary); summer brings intense heat and minimal shade. No pets are permitted on this trail. Day hikers don’t need a permit, but there is a primitive backcountry camp along the loop that requires one if you plan to backpack.
Crowds and parking
Despite its reputation, you may find long stretches of solitude below the rim while the nearby overlooks are busy. The loop shares the same access area as the Upheaval Dome overlooks, and the lot can fill early on popular days—another reason to start at first light.
Best time to hike
Year‑round access, but spring and fall are the sweet spots for temperatures. In summer, begin at dawn and be conservative with pace and water. In winter, check conditions for ice and snow and bring traction if needed. Early morning light is gorgeous on the canyon walls; afternoon brings more shade on the clockwise ascent.
