Mica Hill

Overview

Mica Hill is a highlands walk to a windswept plateau with wide‑open views and a sparkling payoff: outcrops of white quartz laced with mica that catch the light. It’s a moderate outing, typically 7.9 km/4.9 mi (loop or out‑and‑back options) and about 3–3.5 hours, climbing from mixed forest into stunted taiga before breaking into the barrens with 360‑degree vistas of the mountains, coastal villages, and the Aspy fault.

What You’ll See

• Panoramic views from the high plateau—one of the best places to read the park’s big geology, including the Aspy fault.
• Remarkable quartz and mica near the end—shards that gleam like scattered “jewels.” Please look, don’t pocket.
• A mix of Acadian forest and taiga vegetation along the way, shifting to open, lichen‑flecked barrens up high.

Route & Difficulty

Start from Paquette Lake on Paquette Lake Road (parking at the lake). The first ~2 km are easy walking with a gentle grade and a few benches. As you push higher, expect a narrower, rougher footpath with wetter patches and rock underfoot—the price of those big views. The top is exposed and can be very windy, so bring layers and secure hats.

Wildlife & Flora

Keep an eye out for pitcher plants, reindeer lichen, and laurel in the wet, open sections. Signs of moose are possible, though sightings aren’t guaranteed. A loon has been spotted on a pond near the start.

Season & Essentials

A park pass is required. The trail typically operates mid‑May to mid‑October. Weather shifts fast on the plateau—pack layers, water, snacks, and bug repellent in season. There are no facilities on the trail or at the trailhead, and recreational drones are not permitted. Stay on the marked route and resist the urge to collect mica or quartz.

Best Time to Visit

• Start early for quieter conditions and clearer, steadier views.
• Sunny conditions make the mica and quartz sparkle; after rain, expect mud and slick rock.
• Limited shade means midday can feel hot on calm days and raw when the wind kicks up.
