Overview

Mica Hill is a moderate, view-heavy hike across the highlands that earns its name at the end: glittering quartz–mica outcrops that catch the sun. The main route is 7.9 km (4.9 mi) total, with an optional side loop that brings it to about 8.4 km (5.2 mi). Plan on 3–4 hours, depending on pace and whether you add the side loop.

Route and Difficulty

Start at Paquette Lake and follow a well-built path that climbs gradually from roughly 260 m toward 400+ m. The first 2 km are generally wider and gravelled with some benches and platforms—an easy warm-up before the trail narrows and turns rockier on the approach to the plateau. Expect moderate effort overall, with a few short, steeper bits and some wet sections after rain.

Scenery and Geology

The forest shifts from swampy conifer and Acadian mixed woods to stunted taiga and open barrens as you gain elevation. Up top, you’re treated to 360° views over the barrens, coastal villages, and mountains, including sightlines toward the Aspy fault. Near the turnaround, look for the sparkling mica and quartz boulders—this is the trail’s signature. Keep an eye out for pitcher plants and reindeer lichen along wetter patches.

Conditions and Gear

Parts of the tread can be wet and rocky; sturdy, preferably waterproof footwear pays off. The plateau is exposed and windy with limited shade, and weather changes fast—carry a warm layer and enough water even on fair days. In summer, black flies and mosquitoes are common; pack repellent. There are no toilets at the trailhead or on the route.

Best Time to Hike

The trail is typically open mid‑May to mid‑October. Go early to enjoy quieter tread and cooler temps, and to give yourself time for the optional lake-side loop if you’re feeling it. Clear days deliver the biggest views; after rain, expect mud and slick rocks.

Logistics and Rules

Trailhead parking is at Paquette Lake off Paquette Lake Road. A valid park pass is required. Stay on designated paths to protect fragile vegetation. Recreational drone use is not permitted. Dogs are allowed here (on leash), which makes this a good alternative if you’re traveling with a pet and need a scenic option.
