A staff introduction and short history video set up the visit; then a brochure guides a self-paced route through five exhibit buildings. Rooms bring together maritime rescue equipment, photographs, interviews, and artifacts. Look for the breeches buoy and its cart, a drill pole, a life-car, and the original surfboat. The exhibits unfold as you walk around the site, seeing equipment and buildings together rather than as an isolated collection of objects.

The boat from the Mirlo rescueThe original 1874 station houses motor surfboat No.

The original 1874 station houses motor surfboat No. 1046, used in the 1918 rescue of 42 sailors from the British tanker Mirlo. After a German U-boat torpedoed the tanker, Keeper John Allen Midgett and the station crew brought the sailors to safety. The building, commissioned on December 4, 1874, was the first staffed Life-Saving Service station in North Carolina. Seeing the actual boat gives the rescue story a vivid anchor; the museum also preserves artifacts and family stories from other lifesaving crews on these shores.
