Sheets Gulch Trail

Overview

Sheets Gulch slices into the Waterpocket Fold with a quieter, more forgiving slot-canyon vibe than its neighbors. Expect warm-toned Navajo Sandstone walls, intermittent narrows, and long stretches of sandy wash where you can move efficiently. The full point-to-point through-hike runs about 9 miles one way across the fold to a 4WD exit; most hikers sample a few miles up-canyon from the Notom–Bullfrog Road and return the same way. Elevation gain is modest (around 450 feet), but it’s still a backcountry slot: plan for hands-on moves, shallow pools, and route-finding in an unmarked wash.

Route Options

• Out-and-back from Notom–Bullfrog Road: the popular choice. Turn around wherever the narrows and scenery feel “enough” for the day. Typical explorations take 4–7 hours depending on your turnaround point.
• Through-hike shuttle: about 9 miles one way to a west-side 4WD exit near Capitol Gorge/South Draw. This is a fantastic cross-fold day if you have high-clearance 4WD and a shuttle, but it’s committing and remote.

Difficulty and Obstacles

Compared to nearby canyons like Burro Wash, Sheets Gulch is one of the easier Waterpocket Fold slots: no big dryfalls or chokestone problems, just minor drop-offs, occasional shallow pools or mud, and some boulder weaving. Still, there’s no signed trail once you’re in the wash, so navigation and judgment matter. Expect to use your hands and to get your shoes wet after recent rain.

Scenery and Geology

The canyon’s personality is classic Capitol Reef: Navajo Sandstone narrows in reds and oranges, widening sections with sandbanks, and towering Navajo and Wingate walls. Watch the ground—finding bits of petrified wood and even basalt in a sandstone canyon is an odd, memorable twist. In the upper, wider stretches, you’ll also pass surprisingly large conifers contrasting against the slickrock backdrop. Sharp-eyed hikers can spot the big Sheets Gulch Arch perched high on the right wall off the main route (no formal path; off-trail scrambling and route-finding required).

Best Time to Hike

Spring and fall hit the sweet spot for temperatures and light. Summer can work if you start early and use the canyon shade, but heat and monsoonal storms raise the stakes. Winter is possible during dry spells, though ice and cold water make obstacles spicier. Whatever the season, slot canyons demand good weather—avoid if rain is in the forecast.

Tips

• Access is straightforward: the Notom–Bullfrog Road is paved for the first 10 miles, then turns to generally well-graded gravel; the Sheets Gulch parking area is signed.
• Bring extra water; there’s no reliable source (those pools are ephemeral and not for drinking).
• Footwear with real traction is worth it—expect sand, slickrock, mud, and a few hands-on steps.
• For the shuttle exit, plan on high-clearance 4WD and extra time; this is remote country with very light traffic.

Is It For You?

If you want a scenic, less-crowded slot with manageable obstacles and classic Reef geology, this is a rewarding day. If you crave ultra-deep, dramatic narrows, Sheets Gulch is gentler than the headline slots—consider it an underrated, solitude-forward alternative rather than a max-drama canyon.
