Remote, small, and wonderfully wild, this primitive campground sits on bluff tops above Landing Cove on the park’s smallest island (about one square mile). Expect solitude, huge horizons, and the kind of quiet you only get far from the mainland. There are about 10 sites (up to 4 people each), reservations are required, and because of boat schedules most trips end up being multi‑day.

Getting here is half the adventure: you’ll arrive by boat and then hike roughly a quarter mile uphill, gaining about 200 feet from the landing to the campground. The sites are exposed—no real shade—and winds and sun can be intense. In return, you get sweeping ocean vistas, dramatic cliffs, and a front‑row seat to one of the park’s most vibrant wildlife settings. Trails on the island start right from the campground area and cover roughly five miles.

Santa Barbara Island is critical seabird habitat. Western gulls, brown pelicans, multiple cormorant and storm‑petrel species nest here, and the island hosts one of the world’s largest colonies of Scripps’s murrelets. Down on the rocky shores, look for California sea lions, harbor seals, and even northern elephant seals. Restoration of native plants is ongoing, and you’ll notice the landscape recovering as you wander the bluffs and canyons above Cave Canyon.
