Fort Dalles Museum is a local-history museum in The Dalles, housed in the 1856 Surgeon’s Quarters, a Gothic Revival residence from the former Fort Dalles military complex. It opened in 1905; the quarters are the complex’s only surviving officer’s house. The visit also includes a vehicle collection and the Anderson Homestead across the street, so there is more to see than one period home.

Inside the Surgeon’s Quarters, period rooms, photographs, and objects trace pioneer life, frontier medicine, and The Dalles’ role as a Columbia River hub. Give yourself time for the vehicle buildings: the collection has more than 30 wheeled vehicles, including a stagecoach, covered wagon, horse-drawn hearses, surreys, and early automobiles. One surrey belonged to Oregon governor Zenas Moody. This is a good stop if you like historic interiors and objects; if museums are not your thing, the main house alone may feel slow.

The Anderson Homestead is a log house, granary, and barn that Lewis Anderson, a Swedish immigrant, built in 1895 on Pleasant Ridge, about 25 miles southwest of The Dalles. People lived in the house until the 1950s. In 1971, the museum acquired it, moved it to The Dalles, and restored it with community volunteers. The homestead sits across West 16th Street from the Surgeon’s Quarters and is included with museum admission. Today the restored buildings stand in town, away from the farm landscape where the house began.

Allow about an hour; seeing all the buildings and displays can take longer. The grounds sit above downtown at 500 W 15th Street. There is free parking, and the museum describes step-free access to its grounds and primary galleries, plus accessible restrooms. A visitor has reported that the route between the main house and vehicle barns is steep, so check the path if mobility matters. Opening patterns change by season, so confirm current visiting days before planning around the museum.
