More about The Dalles Dam Visitor Center

Start with the bigger pictureThe Dalles Dam Visitor Center is a U.S.

The Dalles Dam Visitor Center is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers interpretive center on the Oregon shore, at the former site of Seufert's fish cannery. It puts a sprawling Columbia River project in reach: the powerhouse, navigation lock and fish-passage works extend about 1.5 miles across the river toward Washington. If the dam is something you usually drive past, this is where the pieces start to make sense.

Listed exhibits include interactive displays, a short film about the dam's benefits and impacts, and a view of fish moving up the ladder. The old cannery foundation and fishwheel sluiceways remain as traces of the place before the dam. Fish viewing depends on migration, so treat it as a chance to look rather than a guaranteed sighting.

Add an outdoor stopNearby Seufert and Patterson parks offer picnic areas and Mount Hood views.

Nearby Seufert and Patterson parks offer picnic areas and Mount Hood views. Seufert is also a winter bald-eagle viewing area, though sightings are never certain. These are separate outdoor stops from the center's interior. Visitor-center hours and tour access are inconsistent across listings, so confirm what's open before making the exhibits your main stop. From I-84, take Exit 87 and follow Bret Clodfelter Way east.
