More about Portland Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint

The view people come forPortland Women’s Forum is a roadside scenic viewpoint on the Historic Columbia River Highway,…

Portland Women’s Forum is a roadside scenic viewpoint on the Historic Columbia River Highway, looking east toward Vista House at Crown Point. The stone building sits above the Columbia River, with the Gorge opening around it. This is the classic frame of Vista House in its larger landscape, and it’s a different experience from going up to the building itself. If you want one quick stop for the postcard view, make it here. The appeal is the relationship between the landmark and the long river valley, not a close look at the architecture.

The stop is small, but the view has room to roam. Look past the building toward the east-running Gorge, then back to Crown Point and the river below. Give your eyes a moment to take in the whole sweep before you reach for your phone. For a photo, keep Vista House in the frame with some of the Gorge around it; that’s what makes this viewpoint distinct from a picture taken at the house.

A viewpoint on a historic roadThe place sits along the Historic Columbia River Highway, built in 1918 as the first road…

The place sits along the Historic Columbia River Highway, built in 1918 as the first road linking Portland and The Dalles. The drive was designed to bring people into the Gorge’s scenery, and this overlook still does that job in a very direct way: pull over, look across the river corridor, and see why Crown Point became a landmark. The viewpoint is a strong stop on a slower drive, especially if you’re comparing the changing angles on the Gorge rather than ticking off only the waterfalls.

Why it carries this nameThe overlook occupies the former Chanticleer Inn property.

The overlook occupies the former Chanticleer Inn property. The Portland Women’s Forum had been working for the preservation and beautification of the Gorge since 1950; when the property was transferred to Oregon in 1963, the group retained the right to erect and maintain a memorial. The forum also helped bring about the appointment of the first Columbia Gorge Commission in the 1950s. That history gives the name a real connection to the landscape: the view was preserved through local civic work, not simply marked as another roadside turnout.

Making the stop workUse the Historic Columbia River Highway arrival point for the viewpoint, and keep it distinct…

Use the Historic Columbia River Highway arrival point for the viewpoint, and keep it distinct from Vista House at Crown Point. The two pair naturally: come here for the wide view of the house, then decide whether you also want to visit the landmark itself. Parking is the main practical uncertainty. Some visitors describe a tight lot and awkward turnaround, while others report enough room, so don’t count on a roomy pullout if the area is busy.

The park’s information lists the viewpoint as accessible, but the exact route and surface aren’t clear. If step-free access matters, check the approach before you go. Food, drinking water and restrooms weren’t verified at this stop, so plan those needs around another confirmed place on your drive.
