Weston Lake

Overview

A classic oxbow lake tucked into Congaree’s old-growth floodplain, Weston Lake breaks up the sea of trees with a rare slice of open water. It’s the scenic payoff along the Boardwalk Loop and the namesake of the Weston Lake Loop—quiet, reflective, and often lively with wildlife.

What You'll See

Expect broad water views ringed by towering bottomland hardwoods and cypress knees. Visitors regularly spot alligators cruising the surface, turtles basking on logs, and wading birds working the edges. It’s a solid stop for photos and a good place to just stand and watch the forest breathe.

Getting There

Reach the lake via the elevated Boardwalk Loop and continue on the Weston Lake Loop if you want more time in the woods. The Boardwalk Loop is about 2.3 miles; the Weston Lake Loop is about 4.5 miles and mixes boardwalk with natural-surface trail. There’s no parking at the lake—everything starts from the visitor center area.

Wildlife Highlights

Alligators are the headline act, but keep an eye out for herons, owls, and other wading birds along with turtles. Snakes are part of the scene; watch your step and give all wildlife space.

Know Before You Go

There are no restrooms, water, or picnic facilities at the lake. Mosquitoes can be intense, especially in warm, wet weather. After heavy rains, sections of trail may be muddy, slick, or closed by high water—plan accordingly.

Best Time to Visit

Go early or late in the day for cooler temps, softer light, and the best wildlife activity. Post-rain visits can be atmospheric, but check conditions if water levels are up.
