Overview
A highlight of the Boardwalk Loop, Weston Lake Overlook gives you a calm, open-water panorama in a park that’s otherwise all trees and knees. It sits at the edge of Weston Lake—an oxbow of the Congaree River—so you’re gazing across still water framed by cypress and tupelo. It’s reached directly via the elevated boardwalk from the Harry Hampton Visitor Center and is close to the Champion Loblolly Pine.
What You’ll See
Expect mirror-smooth water with cypress and tupelo “knees” poking up, especially striking on windless days. In leaf-off seasons (winter to early spring), the views open up even more through the canopy.
Wildlife
This is a dependable wildlife stop: visitors regularly spot alligators cruising or basking, plus turtles sunning on logs. Birdlife is strong—think wading birds, great blue herons, osprey, barred owls, and pileated woodpeckers. With luck, you might catch river otters or deer moving through.
Why It’s Unique
Weston Lake is a classic oxbow lake—an old river bend cut off from the main channel. Oxbows here are shallow (roughly 5–8 feet), collect sediment, and can look very different with season and water levels. In extreme droughts, some area oxbows have even gone dry, underscoring how dynamic this floodplain is.
Getting There
Follow the elevated Boardwalk Trail from the visitor center; the overlook is a well-marked stop on the southern part of the loop. Facilities (parking, restrooms, water) are back at the visitor center—not at the overlook.
Best Time to Visit
- Early morning: best for wildlife, softer light, cooler temps, and fewer people.
- Winter–early spring: clearest lake views through the trees.
- After heavy rain: check for temporary closures; the boardwalk can be slick.
- Summer: expect thicker foliage and more mosquitoes; plan accordingly.
Make the Most of It
Bring binoculars and a camera, pause quietly on the platform, and scan logs and shorelines for movement. In warm months, bug spray isn’t optional—it’s essential. Wear shoes with good grip; wet boardwalk can be slippery.
