Stockade Lake North Campground is a 42-site campground on the western side of Custer State Park, about four miles east of Custer along US 16A. Its two loops sit among trees, with a boat ramp, fishing pier and shore-fishing access mapped around the lake. I’d use it as a practical base for the park’s western side if camping is part of the trip.

Gordon Stockade is a separate stop near the campground. A party led by John Gordon built a log stockade on French Creek after Custer’s 1874 expedition found gold there; the army removed the group within five months. Today’s structure is the third reconstruction, so it adds a worthwhile history detour to a stay focused on camping and the lake.
