Akron Northside Station

Akron Northside Station is a small wooden depot in downtown Akron and the southern boarding point for Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Think of it as a useful gateway into the park, not a stop that needs a long visit on its own. A connector trail links the station with the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, so you can pair a train ride with time on the path.

The railroad recommends arriving 45 minutes before your train; parking is free at its boarding stations. Check the current timetable before you go, since departures and trip options vary. The station is on a bus line and within walking distance of downtown food and shops. The National Park Service lists parking, restrooms and wheelchair accessibility here. CVSR offers reserved accessible seating in a designated railcar, but confirm current platform and boarding details with the railroad if those affect your plans.

The tracks were laid by the Valley Railway, which opened in 1880 to carry central Ohio coal to factories and cities in Canton, Akron and Cleveland. Akron businessman David L. King helped shape the project; despite construction and financial troubles, the line became a partnership among the three cities. Exhibits at the station tell more of that railroad story.

The train and Towpath run alongside each other through the valley. Riders often enjoy the helpful volunteers, dome-car views and fall color, while some find stretches of the trip slow or repetitive. It’s a good fit if you like a relaxed historic rail ride; choose carefully if you want a short stop or nonstop big views. The Café Car sells snacks, soft drinks, beer, wine and souvenirs aboard the train, not at the station.
