Blue Hen Falls

Use designated parking at Boston Mill Visitor Center or Boston Trailhead. The NPS-described route is 3 miles round trip from Boston Mill and can be longer if you park farther away. Follow the blue blazes and carefully cross Riverview and Boston Mills roads; roadside parking is prohibited. Lots often fill on warm weekends, so an early or late start helps. Boston Mill has a public restroom and water refill before you go; there's no drinking water at the falls.

The trail climbs and drops over two steep ridges, starting with an immediate 200-foot climb. A 100-foot staircase leads down to a footbridge, then the route climbs again before zigzagging down to the falls. It's unpaved and can get muddy or icy, and NPS says it isn't wheelchair accessible. The waterfall is modest, so this is a better pick for someone who enjoys the wooded walk as much as the destination.

For stronger flow, go after rain or snowmelt, when the trail is also at its muddiest. In a dry spell the cascade can be slight. The NPS overlook is the established photo stop; frame the broad rock shelf around the falls to give the 15-foot drop some scale.

One local tale links the name to Prohibition-era bootleggers, a hidden still and blue fighting hens. No record confirms the story, so treat it as folklore rather than settled history.
