Bovey Castle is a large early-20th-century, Grade II* listed Neo-Elizabethan country house turned hotel at North Bovey, set in Dartmoor’s rolling valleys. Its grey-stone facade and broad garden stair rise above terraces toward a lake and the River Bovey, giving it a formal estate feel quite different from a moorland stop.
Guests find carved wood in the Great Hall, with a library and Adam Room nearby. The house served as a convalescent home for officers during the First World War and a military hospital in the Second. Its 18-hole golf course was designed in 1926 by J. F. Abercromby.
Treat this as a hotel destination rather than a walk-in attraction. The hotel offers bookings for rooms, dining, spa treatments, activities and golf; arrange a reason to visit before heading in, and confirm whether non-guests may use the grounds or facilities.
