Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Sunshine brings the butterflies into better flight, but the butterfly house stays hot and humid. It overwinters from November to March; during that stretch, the visit is for the otters. Skip it if you want a wide-open moorland experience or dislike close animal displays.

Access and facilities

The entrance is at The Station in Buckfastleigh, beside but separate from the South Devon Railway. There is free all-day parking, small toilets in the attraction building and picnic benches. A café beside the railway booking office and a summer kiosk in the car park are food options; the kiosk sells snacks and ice cream. Paths are gravel, and some otter-pen fences are too high for seated viewing; ask staff for a better vantage point. Dogs cannot enter. Accessible toilets and baby-changing are at the café or on the railway platform.

More about Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary

An easy wildlife stopThis family-run attraction in Buckfastleigh pairs a tropical butterfly house with an otter…

This family-run attraction in Buckfastleigh pairs a tropical butterfly house with an otter sanctuary. Walk among free-flying exotic butterflies and tropical plants in warm, humid air, then watch otters on land or through an underwater viewing area. It is a self-contained animal visit just beyond Dartmoor’s southern edge, a change from walking across the open moor.

Three otter species live here: European, Asian short-clawed and North American river otters. The residents include animals rescued, born at the sanctuary, exchanged with other collections, or retired there, so it is not a rescue-only centre. Keeper feeding talks are the liveliest time to see the otters moving around.
