Wide river bar with big Denali views and rare solitude
Overview
McKinley Bar is the broad, braided gravel delta of the McKinley River—an open, wild expanse with outsized views of Denali and the high Alaska Range when the weather cooperates. It’s the kind of place that makes Denali feel endless: sky, gravel flats, and ice-fed channels all around.
Unlike much of Denali’s brushy tundra, the bar is open and flat—great for roaming and framing big landscapes. It’s also one of only a handful of maintained-trail destinations deep in the park past Savage River, so it sees far fewer people than the entrance-area trails. On a clear day, the Denali views here are the kind you’ll talk about for years.

Local know-how
Start at Wonder Lake Campground and follow the McKinley Bar Trail about 2.5 miles to the river.
Plan as if there are no services at the bar; carry everything you need.
Mosquitoes can be fierce—bring repellent and a head net.
Only attempt river crossings if you’re experienced; early morning is typically safest.
If camping, set up at least a half-mile from the trail and practice strict food storage.

Guide
Expect sprawling gravel flats cut by multiple channels of the glacier-fed McKinley River. On clear days, the mountain dominates the skyline. Wildlife is very possible: moose and caribou frequent the area, and bears may roam near the river. The openness helps with spotting animals—but it also means you need to stay alert and give wildlife plenty of space.
This is classic braided-river country, built by meltwater flushing silt and gravel from the Muldrow Glacier. The channels shift, bars reform, and the landscape is never quite the same from year to year—part of the fascination and the challenge.
You can camp on or near the bar in true backcountry fashion (no developed sites). Plan to be fully self-sufficient and camp at least a half-mile from the trail. Store food properly and carry bear spray. Many spots offer wide-open views, but you’ll be exposed to wind and weather.
Think full-on wilderness kit: sturdy waterproof boots, layers and rain gear, bug repellent and a head net, navigation tools, bear spray, and a plan for treating river water if you use it. Trekking poles help if you contemplate any water crossings.
