About Wonder Lake Campground

Wonder Lake Campground is Denali’s remote, back-of-the-road base camp at mile 85, prized for its proximity to Wonder Lake and head-on views of the Alaska Range on clear days. With just 28 tent-only sites and no private vehicles allowed, it feels quiet and wild—the kind of place where you wake up, unzip the tent, and check if Denali is out.

The campground sits a short walk from the lakeshore, and it’s the closest front-country staging point for those iconic views. Getting There

You’ll reach Wonder Lake via the park’s shuttle/camper bus system; personal vehicles aren’t permitted this far in. Expect a long but rewarding ride—drivers frequently stop for wildlife and scenery, and routes either continue along the lake’s east side or turn down the short Wonder Lake Campground Road to the south end of the lake.

Trails and social paths lead out from the area, including a one-mile walk to the McKinley River; expect some boggy footing and be prepared for off-trail tundra wandering if you explore.
