This out-and-back ramble starts near Wonder Lake Campground and heads across open tundra and brushy lowlands to the broad, braided edge of the McKinley River. On a clear day, you get knockout views of Denali with Wonder Lake shimmering nearby—photographers love this one. The walk is mostly flat and marked, but expect wet or muddy patches after rain. Plan on roughly 5 miles total (about 2.4–2.5 miles each way).
Is it for you?
If you want a real Denali feel without committing to off-trail navigation, this is a smart pick—one of the few defined paths this deep in the park. It’s easy to moderate, with big scenery and a dramatic river-bar finish. The tradeoffs: mosquitoes can be fierce in midsummer, and sections can be soggy. If you’re experienced and conditions allow, you can wander beyond the official endpoint onto the gravel bars—just remember you’re leaving the trail and need to manage your own route-finding.
Logistics
You can’t drive here: private vehicles stop at mile 15 on the Park Road. Reaching Wonder Lake requires a tour, transit, or camper bus, and service can change with road conditions—confirm schedules before committing to the long ride. Bring waterproof footwear, layers for fast-changing weather, and bear spray, and review current NPS advisories before you go.
