Sitting near Park Headquarters at about mile 3.4 on the park road, Denali’s Sled Dog Kennels are the only working sled dog kennels in the National Park System. The dogs aren’t just for show—they’re partners in protecting the park’s wilderness in winter. If you’re even mildly dog‑curious, this is one of the most distinctive stops in the park.
Denali’s kennels date to 1922, and the building is the oldest in the park still used for its original purpose. The dogs and rangers continue a century‑long tradition of winter patrols and hauling supplies—knowledge grounded in generations of Alaska Native expertise. This isn’t a tourist show layered onto a park; it’s a working operation that just happens to welcome visitors.

Expect an active dog yard with around 30 Alaskan huskies, sturdy wooden dog houses, and a fenced demonstration area. Inside the historic kennels building, the Sled Room lays out how mushing shaped the park and Alaska. In summer, rangers lead engaging demonstrations that show harnessing and explain how teams communicate and work together. If you time it right, you might also meet puppies.
You’ll find basic interpretive exhibits and a vault toilet; otherwise, services are minimal—no food, no water filling, and spotty to no cell service. Bring layers for the weather and your own water. During demonstrations, viewing space fills and the dog yard can feel busy.
The park’s first superintendent, Harry Karstens, acquired the original team in 1922 to patrol the new park and haul supplies. That working mission continues today, making these kennels a living museum and a practical tool for managing winter wilderness without engines.
