About Polychrome Pass

Polychrome Pass is the park road’s technicolor moment—a high perch around miles 44–46 where the hillsides explode in reds, oranges, and grays. It’s a quick roadside stop with big payoff: sweeping tundra, braided river valleys, and the Alaska Range on the horizon.

The name says it all. “Polychrome” means many colors, and you see them immediately across the slopes and ridgelines. This is one of the most photographed stretches of the road and a regular highlight on bus itineraries when the road is open.

Early or late light brings out the color saturation in the rocks. Even in mid‑summer, winds can be brisk at this elevation and clouds can roll through quickly—layers are your friend. If you get variable light, wait a few minutes; sun breaks can transform the scene.

Getting There and Current Access

Polychrome sits along the Denali Park Road near mile 46. Traditionally, most visitors reach this stretch by park shuttle buses during the main season. However, a major landslide at Pretty Rocks (mile 45.4) has disrupted access beyond mile 43 in recent years while a new bridge is built. Before you plan on reaching Polychrome, check the latest road status updates.
