Why hike it
Starting at the Eielson Visitor Center, this short out-and-back drops quickly into the Gorge Creek drainage and ends at the gravel bars of the Thorofare River. It’s about 2.0 miles total (round-trip) to the end of the maintained trail, with roughly 600 feet of loss on the way down—and the same back up. Expect dramatic gorge scenery, wide-open river bars, and, on clear days, sweeping views toward Denali and the Alaska Range.
What to expect
The descent uses switchbacks and can be steep, with footing that turns loose or muddy after rain or early-season melt. The maintained trail ends at the river bars; beyond that is off-trail terrain with potential creek crossings and no markings. Despite being next to a busy visitor center, this path sees fewer feet than other short walks nearby, so it often feels more secluded.
Know before you go
Plan 1–1.5 hours for the round trip, but save energy for the climb out—it’s the toughest part. The Eielson area is exposed and weather shifts fast; bring layers and be ready for wind and rain. There’s no potable water on the route, so carry your own or treat river water. Wildlife is common in this area; carry bear spray and make noise. Best hiking is late June through early September, when the road is open and most snow is gone. Access to Eielson is typically via park shuttle buses.
