Start directly from the Eielson Visitor Center; the loop begins steps from the bus stop.
Fragile alpine tundra—stay on the marked path. Expect rapid weather changes and strong winds even in summer; surfaces are uneven and not fully wheelchair accessible.
A quick taste of Denali’s high-country tundra right outside the Eielson Visitor Center (mile 66). This easy loop is about 0.3–0.33 miles total, with minimal elevation change and broad, open views of surrounding ridges—and, on clear days, Denali itself. Low, delicate plants, summer wildflowers, and interpretive signs make this a short but rich walk.
What to expect
Underfoot it’s mostly compact dirt and gravel with a few uneven spots, so it’s not fully wheelchair accessible. Interpretive panels explain how mosses, lichens, and dwarf shrubs survive in this harsh, wind-scoured environment. It’s a popular, close-in stroll—great for families and anyone needing a leg-stretcher after the long ride to Eielson.
Good to know
Stay strictly on the marked path; alpine tundra is fragile and easily damaged. Weather can shift fast—bring a wind layer even in midsummer. No permit is required for this day hike, and pets aren’t allowed on park trails.
