Pros & cons

PROS

  • Easy creek-side walk close to Denali's park entrance
  • Picnic-area parking and restrooms make a convenient start

CONS

  • Limited alpine views because the route stays in forest
  • Roots, mud, insects, wildlife, and nearby junctions require attention
PARKING

Use the Riley Creek Day Use Area / Picnic Area parking lot. The NPS entrance map labels it Riley Creek Day Use Area, and the official place page identifies the site as Riley Creek Picnic Area with parking and restrooms.

CAUTION

Riley Creek is cold and swift; do not enter or cross it. Watch for roots, mud, mosquitoes, and moose, maintain NPS wildlife distances, and do not run from wildlife.

Why hike it\nRiley Creek Trail is an easy out-and-back from the Riley Creek Picnic Area along the forested north bank of Riley Creek toward the Alaska Railroad trestle corridor. The mapped corridor is about 1.6 miles round trip, with moving water, boreal forest, and a small-footbridge and trestle area close to the park entrance.\n\n### What to expect\nThis is a low-elevation stroll on a mostly gentle, packed-dirt corridor, but roots and mud can make footing uneven. The route is mapped as an out-and-back rather than a loop: follow the creek-side line to the turnaround and return the same way. Use the official Denali entrance-trails map for nearby connections to McKinley Station Trail, Triple Lakes Trail, and Riley Creek Campground; those extensions are separate from this trail's stored line and distance.\n\n### Is it for you?\nChoose it for an easy creek-and-forest walk close to the entrance, picnic area, and campground. It is not a big-view alpine hike. Bring water, insect repellent in buggy weather, and a light layer; stay on the established corridor, watch your footing, and give moose and other wildlife plenty of space.
