Place
This entrance-area walk is about history as much as scenery. Running 1.6 miles one way between the Denali Visitor Center and Riley Creek Campground/Mercantile, it follows Riley Creek on a 48-inch-wide compacted gravel path with roughly 100 feet of total elevation change and short pitches up to 8.5%. Expect interpretive signs, traces of the old McKinley Station settlement, and the impressive 1922 Alaska Railroad steel bridge towering overhead. Figure about an hour one way at a casual pace.
Why hike it
It’s a low-effort way to sink into Denali’s early days—gold prospectors, railroad crews, and the site of Maurice Morino’s Mount McKinley Park Hotel (which hosted President Harding in 1923) are all part of the story told along the trail. Creek sounds, spruce forest, and easy access make it a solid first walk after you arrive. If you want a bit more mileage, combine it with the Bike Path for a mellow ~3.0-mile loop.
Good to know
This is a connector-style trail near the park entrance, so don’t expect solitude or big mountain views. Historic features are subtle—many structures are long gone—so the interpretive signs do the heavy lifting. Surfaces and grades are friendly for most hikers, but the steeper bits and gravel may be limiting for some mobility devices. Best enjoyed in the main hiking season (late spring through early fall); winter snow and ice can obscure features and make footing slick.
