Smallwood Store Museum is a small historic trading post on Chokoloskee Island, beside Chokoloskee Bay in the Ten Thousand Islands. The raised red store is now a museum and gift shop, with original goods and fixtures still inside. It’s a good short stop if you want to understand the people who lived along the Everglades’ Gulf Coast. It sits outside Everglades National Park’s boundary, so treat it as a regional history stop rather than a park visitor center. Museum entry is paid, which makes it a better fit if you’re interested in the history than if you only need a shop.

The visit is a compact, room-by-room look at preserved stock and fixtures, including the former bedroom. Take your time with the displays if you want more than a quick walk through. The shop sells local crafts, Seminole and Miccosukee jewelry and crafts, books, and Everglades keepsakes; it’s a historic site first, not a general store.

Why it mattered to the islandsTed Smallwood opened the trading post in 1906 and became the island’s postmaster that year.

Ted Smallwood opened the trading post in 1906 and became the island’s postmaster that year. The store exchanged needed goods for hides, furs, and farm produce, and its mail service helped connect this remote island community with the outside world. It served local settlers and Seminole people, making the building a practical hub as well as a place to trade.

The present building dates to 1917 and stands on timber pilings above Chokoloskee Bay. From the porch, look out over the water toward the Ten Thousand Islands. For a picture of the store itself, step back toward the water’s edge so the pilings and its full raised profile fit in the frame.

Boat trips into mangrove waterways and the Ten Thousand Islands depart from the store, but they’re run as a separate operation and aren’t part of the museum visit. Plan and book a tour separately if that’s what you came for.
