Paurotis Pond is a roadside pond and scenic stop on Main Park Road in Everglades National Park, about 24 miles from the Homestead entrance. It is a worthwhile short pause if you are interested in birdwatching: wading birds use it as a rookery during nesting season, though what you see shifts with the season and water levels. Bring binoculars for birds across the water.
The pond is a traditional nesting place for wading birds. A 2015 park account named Roseate Spoonbills, Wood Storks, ibises, egrets, herons and Anhingas among the birds nesting here. It also described about 400 pairs of Wood Storks nesting at the pond in recent years at that time; treat that as a historical snapshot, not a current count.
The broad pond and tree-lined far shore are the view, with birds as a bonus when they are feeding or nesting. For a photo, include some open water and the opposite shoreline; binoculars are more useful than expecting close wildlife portraits. Bird activity can be quiet when water is high, so give the stop a little time and keep expectations flexible.
