Eco Pond

Eco Pond is a freshwater wetland beside Main Park Road in Flamingo, circled by a half-mile walking loop. It's a worthwhile short stop for wading birds, shorebirds and ducks; alligators and Florida softshell turtles also cruise the pond, and crocodiles are occasional. Wildlife doesn't arrive on cue, so some visits are quieter than others.

From Flamingo Visitor Center, drive about 0.8 mile south on Main Park Road to the roadside parking area on the right. Dawn and dusk can be good for birding, but mosquitoes are most active then too. Bring repellent if you're going at those hours, and give the pond a little quiet time rather than expecting a show on demand.

This is a patient wildlife-viewing stop, not a guaranteed close-up. For bird photos, look across the open water toward the vegetated shore; leaving some water and shoreline in the frame gives the bird context and shows the wetland around it.

Eco Pond was built to naturally filter and cleanse treated wastewater from Flamingo's developed area. The loop goes around a working wetland as well as a birding spot, which gives this small stop a useful bit of Everglades infrastructure to notice.
