Otter Cave Hammock Trail

Otter Cave Hammock Trail is a roughly 0.25-mile loop off Tram Road in Shark Valley. Its rough limestone path winds through tropical hardwood hammock, crosses a small stream on footbridges, then meets the pavement for a short return. Come for the close look at solution holes and a quick change of scenery from the tram corridor; this is a brief detour, not a long hike. Allow about 15–20 minutes with a few stops.

Distance references differ: one gives 0.25 mile one way, while another rounds the trail to 0.3 without stating its convention. The mapped loop follows the natural path and short paved return between its Tram Road junctions. Walking from Shark Valley Visitor Center to the access adds about half a mile each way and is separate from the trail distance.

The path is nearly level but not smooth. Solution holes pock the limestone floor, and some are deep enough that you will want to watch each step. The short length makes this an easy outing for most walkers, though the footing is rough and the trail is not wheelchair accessible.

Small footbridges cross a clear stream with pools. The route continues beneath the hardwood canopy past a large cypress with knees at the edge of the path; low rock shelves make tiny rapids where water runs over the limestone. It is a close-up walk through the hammock rather than a route to an overlook.

Start from the trail access on Tram Road, about half a mile behind Shark Valley Visitor Center; the center is the practical place to park. The paved return is part of a road also used by bicycles and trams. The limestone section can flood in summer, so check current conditions at the Visitor Center before setting out. Pets are not allowed on park trails.
