This is the quintessential Milford Road pull-off: an easy, hop-out-of-the-car viewpoint across the wide, glacially carved Eglinton Valley. Golden tussock grasslands stretch to the horizon, with steep beech-clad ranges hemming you in on both sides. It’s one of the only post‑glacial river valleys here you can actually drive through, which makes the big‑scale Fiordland scenery ridiculously accessible.

Wildlife
The valley is a stronghold for native species thanks to active conservation work. Mohua (yellowhead), kākā, and kākāriki live in the beech forest, and both long- and short‑tailed bats occur in the area. You’re unlikely to tick them all from the roadside, but early or late in the day ups your chances of bird activity—bring binoculars.
Practicalities
There are no facilities at the lookout itself. Plan toilet stops at Knobs Flat a short drive away. Expect sandflies in warmer months and changeable weather year-round—layers and a waterproof are smart. It’s popular with tour buses, but the valley floor has plenty of space to wander a little for quieter views.
