Tucked just off the Te Anau–Milford Highway, Totara Campsite is a DOC standard campground that trades frills for atmosphere. You’re camping under tall beech trees beside a clear river with mountain backdrops—quiet, sheltered, and usually far less busy than the bigger spots on Milford Road.
Setting & vibe
Expect a peaceful, bush-clad basin with a short stroll to the water. The sites feel tucked away from the road, and mornings can be gorgeous as the sun hits the surrounding peaks. It’s a handy overnight for an early push to Milford Sound without the crowds.
Facilities & rules
This is a basic DOC setup: non‑flush (long‑drop) toilets, no showers, and no treated water (draw from the creek and treat/boil it). Fires are allowed only in designated fireplaces and only when no fire ban is in place—check current DOC fire rules before striking a match. It’s first‑come, first‑served; no bookings. A few picnic tables are present, and DOC staff may pop by.
Access & vehicles
Drive‑in access right off SH94. Tents and campervans fit fine; larger rigs are generally okay but may find turning room limited—parking near the entrance can be easier. There’s typically some mobile coverage here, though it can vary. Starlink works if you bring it.
Wildlife & nuisances
You’ll hear plenty of birdsong in the beech forest, and sandflies tend to be less ferocious here than at some Fiordland spots—still bring repellent. A couple of recent visitors reported mice nosing around vehicles at night, so store food wisely. Anglers use the river access.
