About Hall Arm

Hall Arm is a remote side branch of Doubtful Sound, about 8 km long, walled by steep, rainforest-clad mountains. It’s the quiet, contemplative corner people dream about when they picture Fiordland: still water, moody cliffs, and silence so complete you hear the waterfalls before you see them.

Compared to Milford’s headline drama, Hall Arm trades crowds for solitude. After rain, countless thin ribbons pour off the cliffs; in calm spells, the water mirrors the slopes perfectly. It’s one of the best places in the fiords to simply drift and soak up the scale of the place.

With access limited to watercraft, crowding is rarely an issue compared to Milford, but tours can still cluster midday—early or late outings feel more serene.

Access and what to expect

There’s no road access—reach Hall Arm by boat, guided cruise, or kayak. Facilities are minimal to non-existent once you’re out here, so plan to be self-sufficient and ready for sudden weather shifts. Expect rain; it’s part of the show.
