Overview
Tucked beneath the West Arm of Lake Manapōuri, this underground powerhouse is the working heart of New Zealand’s largest hydro station—out of sight, inside a cavern excavated in hard granite. You descend through a long access tunnel to a machine hall the size of an aircraft hangar, where the station harnesses the natural drop between the lake and the sea at Doubtful Sound.
It’s an engineering feat with a remarkably low visual footprint. The generating hall sits roughly 180–200 meters below ground, reached via a 2 km tunnel, and the hall itself stretches about 111 m long, 18 m wide, and 39 m high. It’s also part of a bigger conservation story—the Save Manapouri campaign grew from plans tied to this project and became a landmark moment in New Zealand environmental history.

Guide
Construction ran through the 1960s, requiring about 1.4 million tonnes of rock to be removed. The station now delivers around 800 MW via seven generating units and has long supplied power for the aluminium smelter at Tiwai Point.
Don’t expect wildlife inside the facility, but the lake crossing and surrounding bush can offer sightings of native birds. Out toward Doubtful Sound, marine life is occasionally seen.
This is an active industrial site with no public parking, restrooms, or food on location. Dress warmly for the underground hall and bring rain gear for Fiordland’s famously wet weather. Photography rules may apply—confirm on arrival.
