Expect a compact, photogenic drop flowing through vivid red and green sedimentary layers, with broad, flat rock benches ideal for lounging or a snack. A sturdy swinging footbridge crosses the creek nearby, and the shaded forest keeps this outing pleasant even on warm days. The plunge pool is tempting for a very quick dip, but the water is glacially cold.
Getting There & Route
Most visitors park at Jackson Glacier Overlook on Going-to-the-Sun Road and follow the signed trail downhill toward Reynolds Creek (Gunsight/Piegan Pass corridor). It’s roughly 2.0–2.2 miles round trip with about 500–600 feet of total gain; remember, the return is the uphill part. The Reynolds Creek backcountry campground (with a vault toilet) sits just beyond the bridge. An alternate start from the St. Mary Falls trailhead adds distance but can be paired with the park shuttle in season.
Season & Best Time to Visit
Best May–October, when snow is gone and the road is open. Go early or late in the day for easier parking and softer light—the red and green rock tones pop under overcast or in golden hour. Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends, and this spot is often less crowded than the marquee falls along the road.
Wildlife & Safety
Berry patches (huckleberries, thimbleberries) and cow parsnip make bear encounters possible. Carry bear spray, make noise in brushy stretches, and give wildlife plenty of space. Rocks near the water are slick, and currents can be swift—treat the creek with respect if you wade or dip.
Make It a Bigger Day
If you’re feeling strong, continue past the bridge on the Gunsight Pass Trail to Florence Falls or commit to a longer push toward Gunsight Lake. The Deadwood–Florence combo delivers varied scenery without an all-day effort.
