Wotans Throne is a flat‑topped, sheer‑walled mesa rising to about 7,721 feet and towering roughly 5,200 feet above the Colorado River. It’s one of the North Rim’s most recognizable silhouettes and a favorite subject for photographers.

Nearby features like Freya Castle and Vishnu Temple round out the vista.

Geology & Naming

The mesa showcases classic Grand Canyon strata—sandstone, limestone, and shale—with a hard caprock protecting the softer layers below. The name honors “Wotan,” the Old High German name for Odin, reflecting the canyon’s tradition of mythological names.

Getting There & Amenities

You don’t go to the Throne itself—there’s no public trail to its summit. The standard (and best) vantage is Cape Royal on the North Rim. Amenities are at Cape Royal, not at Wotans Throne; plan to bring what you need for the viewpoint stop.

Wildlife

Typical North Rim wildlife includes mule deer, Kaibab squirrels, ravens, and various raptors. Dawn and dusk are your best bets for seeing animals active along the forested rim while you’re out for sunrise or sunset light.
